This old-timey tomato used to be the industry standard (before the advent of tomatoes bred for shipping endurance). Initially bred by Campbell’s, the soup company in 1928, this beefsteak was used for canning and juicing as well as fresh eating and was loved for it’s big and bold flavor.

Growing recommendations
Seed tomatoes ¼” deep 4-8 weeks before last frost. Seed densely and transplant to cells or pots after seedlings develop true leaves. Transplant 18”-24” apart when days are warm and there is no longer any risk of frost (ideally avoiding night temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius). Tomatoes like a rich soil, amend with compost or manure as needed. When transplanting, be sure to cover the root ball and submerge the stalk all the way to the cotyledons – the submerged stalk will form adventitious roots. Water thoroughly when transplanting. Stake or trellis tomatoes, unless they are dwarf varieties.
